Blender MCP · Installation

Installing Blender MCP

Blender MCP is a server that runs on your computer and that your MCP client launches (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex). You install it with Synthetic Setup. It talks to Blender through the Synthetic Blender MCP add-on, which you enable once in Blender. Verified on Windows.

Requirements

Blender5.1 or 5.2 LTS
Node.js18 or higher
OSWindows 10/11 · macOS (beta: it may have errors)
MCP clientClaude Desktop, Cursor, Codex, or any MCP client
LicenseYour Blender MCP license key (see /dashboard/licenses)

1. Install it with Synthetic Setup

Download Synthetic Setup from /dashboard/downloads and run it. It finds your MCP clients (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex) and adds Blender MCP to each one with your license already loaded.

Prefer to edit your client's config by hand? The MCP client setup guide shows the exact entry.

2. Restart your MCP client

Quit your MCP client and open it again: servers are loaded at startup. The first time, the server downloads in a few seconds and, once your license is checked, leaves the Blender add-on on your computer, in C:\Users\YOUR_USER\.synthetic\mcp\blender-mcp\<version>\blender-addon\.

Synthetic Setup also takes care of Node.js: if your computer doesn't have it, it adds it for your MCP clients.

3. Enable the add-on in Blender

Do this once per Blender version:

  1. In Blender, open Edit → Preferences → Add-ons.
  2. Open the menu at the top right of the list, choose Install from Disk… and pick the file synthetic_blender_mcp.py from the folder of step 2.
  3. Check that “Synthetic Blender MCP” is enabled in the list.

The add-on starts with Blender every time. Its status is in the 3D Viewport sidebar (press N) → Synthetic MCP tab.

The add-on is free software under the GNU GPL version 3, as Blender requires for add-ons; the MCP server is Synthetic's own software and needs your license.

4. Try it

With Blender open, ask your MCP client something simple:

What version of Blender is open, and what objects are in the scene?

If it answers with your Blender version and your objects, everything works. Then try something bigger: build a small scene, light it and render it.

Important: Blender must be open, with the add-on enabled, whenever your MCP client runs a tool. Otherwise the tools answer that Blender is not connected.
